Remembering Naomi Judd, a country icon who embodied love through music

Less than a week into the new year, 2012 is shaping up to be a good year for some artists and, to paraphrase Tina Turner, love might have something to do with it. Getting engaged seems to be all the rage as a queen of soul Aretha Franklin announced her engagement to longtime friend William “Willie” Wilkerson. The couple are due to wed this summer in Miami and Franklin confirmed that “no, I’m not pregnant.” It just goes to show that with a little respect and a little prayer, anything can happen. In More Bridal News, Aerosmith’s steven tyler popped the question to his longtime girlfriend, Erin Brady, and R&B crooner john legend proposed to his girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen. For the previously divorced Tyler, this time is for real. “I don’t want to hurt anyone anymore,” Tyler told Oprah Winfrey on “Oprah’s Next Chapter” on Jan. 1. “For all the divorces I’ve had, I’ve hurt those girls deeply. It’s behavior I’m ashamed of and shouldn’t have done.” If it’s true that the third time is a charm, Wynonna Judd is lucky as she announced her third engagement, this time to boyfriend Scott “Cactus” Moser. And everyone’s favorite boy band superstar turned entertainment guru Justin Timberlake is engaged to marry his longtime girlfriend Jessica Biel, according to a People report. “She alone is the most important person in my life,” Timberlake said. vanity lounge last June. If they only need love, do you think these artists will succeed by getting married?

In not-so-sweet relationship news, the recent announcement of a sexy celebrity couple Katy Perry and Russell BrandDivorce has taken the entertainment world by storm. After all, they have been married for 14 whole months. But while it looks like the divorce would come with a lot of heartbreak and pain, especially over the festive period, Perry was seen around town making her own fireworks display. According to a New York Post report, the pop singer was out on New Year’s Eve dancing with friends at Soho House in West Hollywood, Calif., the day after Brand filed for divorce. “Katy was in a private room with a group and she seemed in good spirits,” an unnamed source said. “She spent most of the night dancing and laughing with friends. No one would have ever known her husband had just filed for divorce. … She looked like she was having a great time.” As for Brand, he is doing very well too. “I’m fine,” he told the To post. “Everything will be better next year. It seems all is just in love and in war.

As far as Chinese astrology and dragons are concerned, 2012 promises to be the year of Van Halen, at least for classic rock fans. A group of lucky music journalists attended the band’s official ceremony launch 2012 at the intimate Café Wha? in New York on January 5. Eddie Van Halen, along with brother/drummer Alex, son/bassist Wolfgang and original vocalist David Lee Roth, fired up the engines for an hour-long set of classic Van Halen. “Welcome to Occupy Van Halen, ladies and gentlemen,” exclaimed Roth before launching the band into their version of The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.” The group also released a new song, “She’s A Woman”, from Another kind of truthVan Halen’s first studio album with Roth since 1984, which is due out on February 7. Van Halen is also having fun on the road for a tour of the United States, starting in Louisville, Ky., on February 18. What are the different types of Diamond Dave and Co. rock shenanigans in store? Everyone’s guessing it, but for now you can get a glimpse of Roth’s new moves in the first episode of his different types of video album.

John Lennon fans could take a word Cee Lo Greenand said “F*** you” to Lady Killer after taking creative license with the lyrics to Lennon’s famous “Imagine” during a New Year’s Eve performance in New York. Instead of singing “Nothing to kill or die/And no religion too”, as the song was originally written, Green sang “Nothing to kill or die/And all religions are true”. Fans quickly took to Twitter to ridicule Green, with one fan tweeting, “The point of these lyrics is that religion causes harm. If ‘all religions are true’ that would be a pretty dark place.” According to a rolling stone report Green responded by tweeting, “Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyrics guys! I was trying to say a world was [sic] you could believe whatever you wanted, that’s all.” The answer seems to have since been retracted. Perhaps Green decided to live in peace instead.

While it might not be very feminine to kiss and say, it sure is like a mayor. At a New Year’s Eve celebration in New York’s Times Square, the Mayor of the Big Apple Michael Bloomberg lips locked with Lady Gaga …and lived to talk about it. “She’s obviously a great artist,” Bloomberg said. The Wall Street Journal of the Fame Monster, which he also found “very charming”. “There are very few people who have embarked on a very difficult undertaking and … have risen to the top as quickly as she did.” Shortly after his kiss with Gaga, Bloomberg turned around and gave his longtime partner Diana Taylor the second kiss of the night. “I would be remiss if I didn’t add that the best kiss of the night came…from Diana,” Bloomberg noted. It sounds like a case of bad romance turned out well.

Indie rock fans are either older than we thought or at least old at heart. Vinyl record sales increased again in 2011, marking a steady, albeit modest, growth in sales in the digital age. And the biggest fans of the old-school format? The Indie Rock Contingent. Among the best-selling vinyls scrapbook for the year were records by the 54th GRAMMY nominees the black keys, Good Iver, fleet foxes, Mumford and Sonsand Wilco. Adele and Radiohead were also part of the top 10. Still, the pop vinyl top was reserved for a true classic: the BeatlesAbbey Road, which holds the top spot for an incredible third year in a row. Such a feat more than 40 years after its original release must give MusiCares the 2012 Person of the Year Paul McCartney a few golden sleeps at night.

LMFAO“Sexy And I Know It” is number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Jason Mraz“I Won’t Give Up” topped the iTunes singles chart.
