Pop is still the # 1 musical genre in the world

(Hypebot) – A new report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry or (IFPI) examines how music is enjoyed around the world and which genres are most popular internationally. Perhaps unsurprisingly, pop reigns supreme, continuing to hold the top spot.

The IFPI took out his annual Listening to music 2019 report, an overview of how recorded music is enjoyed around the world. The study included demographically representative samples of the online population aged 16 to 64 in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia , South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States. Interestingly, the study was also conducted in China and India, but the results from these two countries are not included in the total global figures.

The report found that worldwide these are the most popular genres of music in order of preference:

  1. Pop
  2. rock
  3. Old
  4. Hip-hop / Rap
  5. Dance / Electronics
  6. Indie / Alternative
  7. K-Pop
  8. Metal
  9. R&B
  10. Classic

A few things stand out from this list. First of all, rock is still a strong genre in terms of audience even though it seems to have been written off by the mainstream music business. I’m not sure what Oldies means because it’s not explained. What years does it cover? Are all the genres from those years?

Dancing and electronic music is inferior to what I expected, especially since it seems like it was taking over the world just a few years ago. The report seems to indicate that it has peaked in popularity.

K-Pop is becoming a real force because it now exists as its own category outside of traditional pop music. Will he have life beyond BTS? Next year we will find out.

And although Pop, Rock and Oldies covered the top 3 positions on the charts, the report found that 16-24 year olds are more than four times more likely to choose hip-hop or rap as their genre of choice than any other group. of age. . In South Africa (27%), Russia (23%), Poland (24%) and Germany (21%), more than one in five 16-24 year olds say that hip-hop / rap is their favorite genre. In France, more than a quarter (26%) of 16-24 year olds say that French-language urban music or hip-hop / rap is their favorite musical genre.

It just shows that there is plenty of room for all types of music, although it doesn’t always seem to be. The music industry may be closed to many types of music, but listeners’ ears are not.
