LAKE ALFRED — The Midway Saloon in Los Angeles has big plans for Saturday: its first rockabilly night that includes a pin-up contest and a motorcycle show.

The LA Midway Rockabilly Jamboree begins at 3 p.m. and runs until 11 p.m.

Slated to hit the stage are: Tampa’s Little Sheba & The Shamans, which specializes in rockabilly undertones with a rhythm and blues edge; Orlando’s Big Jef Special, rockabilly with rock and roll influences; and Skinny McGee & His Mayhem Makers of Dade City, which has traditional country music influences.

LA Block, owner of the Midway Saloon in Los Angeles, said she had been a fan of Skinny McGee for several years. When she heard the band was reforming after a few years off, she asked if they would be putting on the saloon’s first rockabilly show.

The Midway Saloon in Los Angeles, now in its eighth year, typically features live bands on Friday and Saturday nights, with karaoke on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

“I love rockabilly music and I love the people, the way they dressed back then, the music – I’m just a big fan,” Block said. “I stay on top of the local music scene. I know a lot of (the musicians) and I do my best to make sure they come out and play.

Block is also planning a special Saturday menu with shrimp porridge and pulled pork.

“It will be a fun day in itself. You meet people, see bands, eat well and hang out with your friends.

Mark Hannah, 55, lead guitarist for Skinny McGee & The Mayhem Makers, said Block made his barn very welcoming for live music. He said he was looking forward to bringing rockabilly music to a smaller music market in Polk County.

“It’s going to be awesome; the music will be fantastic,” said Hannah, who works as a mural and sign painter. “Lake Alfred is a great town and a great place for a good old Americana. That’s what this music is all about, just having fun and dancing.
