R & B / hip-hop has dethroned rock as the most popular musical genre in the United States.

Nielsen Music released their mid-year report and found that hip-hop and R&B are king.

Nielsen classifies the two in the same genre, finding that it accounts for 25.1% of all music consumed in the country. Rock ‘n’ roll came in second with 23 percent. Pop was third and country was the fourth most popular genre. Classical music was in last place with just 1% of all music consumption since the start of the year.

Jason Lipshutz, music editor for Billboard Magazine, isn’t surprised. R&B and hip-hop have dominated the charts throughout the year.

“Everything at the top has been hip-hop and R&B, that’s what’s coming out right now,” Lipshutz said. “Hip-hop and R&B have always been at the forefront of culture, but right now I think it’s a particular circumstance where they dominate. You dominated rock for decades, you had pop music, but now hip-hop and R&B dominate the top 40 as well. “

Analysts attribute the change to the rise in streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. Rock still leads album sales, but streaming has become the number one platform for hip-hop and R&B. Streaming has the backing of big names like Jay-Z, who recently dropped his “4:44” on Tidal. Other heavyweights include Drake, whose album “More Life” broke an on-demand audio stream record in one week.

“The big disparity right now is streaming. Hip-hop and R&B make up 30% of all streaming, rock is down to 18%. There’s a huge disparity there and even though rock is by no means dead people have been declaring rock dead for decades, it’s still here, it’s still thriving in this rising platform, hip. -hop and R&B just do better than rock, ”Lipshutz said. “This has been a huge step for us as more and more people are using steaming sites. You have artists like Kendrick Lama, Migos and Drake who thrive on streaming and that’s a big part of why hip-hop and R&B dominate.
